The syposium will take place in the halls of the Museo del Desierto in Saltillo. It is organized by the Museo del Desierto in collaboration with the Institute of Earth Sciences in Heidelberg, Germany.

Saltillo is the capital of the Mexican State of Coahuila and located on the Mexican altiplano, at an altitude of 1600 to 1800 metres. Weather in September is mostly sunny, with temperatures climbing to 30°C and ca. 20°C at night, so please bring sunblocker and light clothes which protect you from the strong sunshine.

Traveling to Saltillo

The international airport (SLW) is located approximately 18 kilometres east of Saltillo and offers flights to and from Houston, Texas or Mexico City.

The International Airport of Monterrey (MTY), at a distance of 100 kilometres from Saltillo, is an excellent gateway into Mexico when travelling from Canada, the US and Europe. An express bus departs from all airport terminals directly to Saltillo. You can check the website of the operating company for connections, but it is easy to buy the ticket at arrival in the airport.

Cash mashines  are available in the airport. Drawing cash there is the cheapest way to buy Mexican Pesos. Make sure your bank card has the Maestro sign, but it is also possible to get cash with VISA or Master cards.

Hotels and reservations

Saltillo is a major city and offers many possibilities for accommodations. Some hotels are suggested on the downloads page.

The higher-priced hotels offer shuttle buses which take you to the Museo del Desierto on request. Other than that, taking a taxi is the best way to travel through Saltillo. One way costs about 50 pesos, depending on the distance.
